Higher Education in Andhra Pradesh
The higher education scenario in Andhra Pradesh is continuously improving with the government taking several initiatives to increase the number of colleges in the state. For the academic year 2008, 156 new engineering colleges have been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). This has raised Andhra Pradesh to the top spot in the number of engineering colleges. At present, the total number of engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh is 494. Among them, the names worth mentioning include Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology (MGIT), VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Technology (VNRVJIET) and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU).
As per the 2001 census, Andhra Pradesh recorded an overall literacy rate of 60.5%, with male literacy rate being at 70.3% and the female literacy rate at 50.4%.
