Drafting involves a preparation of technical drawings and plans used by construction and production workers. It is used for the development of manufactured products including toys, industrial machinery, toasters and spacecraft, the structures like office buildings, houses and oil and gas pipelines. The drawings made by the drafters provide the visual guidelines, specify the dimensions, procedures and materials and show the technical details of products. The drafters add the technical details using rough sketches, drawings, specifications, calculations and codes that are previously made by the surveyors, engineers, scientists and architects. Today, most commonly used computer software by the drafters is AutoCADD. Hence, the drafters are also referred as CADD (computer-aided design and drafting) operators.
Career in drafting focuses on some special areas such as architecture, product manufacturing, aeronautical and engineering drafting, animation and rendering, designing for movie and television sets, three-dimensional modeling and landscape, electronic, electrical, mechanical, civil and pipeline drafting. Therefore there are several job opportunities in drafting in metropolitan areas, which are highly developed and industrialized.
Skills Required for a Drafting Career:
To get good jobs in drafting, the candidate should have some special skills. He/she should have highly developed drafting and mechanical drawing skills, mathematics skills, knowledge of drafting standards, science skills as well as good background in computer-aided design and drafting techniques and engineering technology. Good communication skill is must in this field. Previous work experience is required in most of the companies.
Drafting Courses:
To start a , one has to complete some courses in drafting. There are various courses including CADD Technology, Principles of Design, Basic Drawing, Software Implementation and 3D Courseware and for a drafting career. There are some certificate courses for drafting offered by numerous institutes in India.
There is a good scope for the drafters in India. Trained and skilled drafters can get good employment opportunities in engineering, architectural firms,manufacturing industries including machinery manufacturing, fabricated metal products manufacturing and transportation equipment manufacturing.
The drafters have to work at computers for long time. As a result, they may suffer from problems like back pain, eyestrain as well as hand and wrist problems. Due to extensive concentration, they may feel the mental stress.
