As the initial misconception of home science as only a domestic science fades away, more and more institutes are today starting courses in Home science in India. For example, in order to improve the employability of the rural students, Punjab Agricultural University is contemplating a six-year degree course in home science. The University of Delhi is also set to restructure the home science courses to make them more relevant in the changing circumstances. It is expected that gradually, home science courses would attract attention in various other colleges and universities as well.

Home Science Courses in India: Home Science Courses are today available in both undergraduate and postgraduate level. While you can opt for B.Sc. (H) or B.Sc (Pass) courses at the undergraduate level, the option for doing postgraduate diploma or M.Sc in various branches of home science is also available in India. Thus, students can choose to specialize in any of the five streams of home science - Food and Nutrition, Resource Management, Human Development, Fabric and Apparel Science and Communication and Extension - or have a general understanding of all streams of home science.

Although home science courses can be pursued by students of social science, commerce or science backgrounds, the course is mainly interdisciplinary in nature and students need to learn basics of physics, chemistry and biology in the first year of their graduation. Therefore, some institutes keep the course open only for students of science background.

Scope of Home Science Courses in India: After completing a graduate degree in home science, students can either join various industries or carry on further studies. The employment opportunities for home science graduates are continuously growing. Thus, one can take up a job in the production industry, tourism industry, service industry or teaching jobs, technical jobs, or sales jobs.

One can also work independently as research analyst or nutrition consultant. The opportunities for home science graduates lie mainly in the non-governmental organizations.

Home Science Courses with their scientific approach and practical applicability can contribute a lot not only in fulfilling the personal ambitions of the students but also in betterment of family and community living in a diverse country like India.
