INTRODUCTION
Established in 1837, the Madras Christian College is counted amongst one of the oldest institutes of higher education in the Indian subcontinent. Although the college is affiliated to the University of Madras, it has an autonomous status as it functions from its campus located in Tambaram, Chennai. In fact, the college was among the first institution in India to be granted autonomy in 1978. There is a great emphasis on including new methods of learning in the curricula in order to make education more consequential and contemporary. There is also a greater emphasis on work with practical orientation and curricular experimentation. The college has sixteen departments that offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various streams. A number of departments at the college also offer M. Phil and PhD programmes. The college offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in arts, science, and commerce streams. Undergraduate programmes in vocational streams of Archaeology, Musicology (arts) and Industrial fish and fisheries (science) are also offered. The college also offers Master of Computer Application programme. |
Madras Christian College also boasts of a log list of famous alumni that include the former president of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, former chief election commissioner T N Seshan, Finance Minister of India P Chidambaram, Tennis star Leander Paes, Music director A. R. Rahman, Grand Master Viswanathan Anand, and several other noted personalities.
The college has recently been awarded the prestigious A+ rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
