Eyre Burton Powell established the Presidency College, Chennai in 1840. Presidency College got affiliated to the University of Madras after the latter’s establishment in 1857. The college was granted autonomy in 1987. After getting the autonomy, the college has carried out curricular and examination reforms to make education meaningful. The autonomy has also ensured that that there is a greater student – teacher interaction. A constant assessment of students in semesters and semester-end examinations is the basis of award of degrees. As the premier higher educational institution under the Government of Tamil Nadu, the college has 20 postgraduate courses and 18 undergraduate courses through 24 departments on offer. Almost all these programmes have research opportunities that lead to M. Phil and PhD degrees. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has accredited the college with four stars.
The list of famous alumni of the college includes Nobel Laureates Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman and Dr. Subrahmanyam Chandrasekhar. Prestigious Indian publication India Today ranked the college as the number one science college in India in 2001 and number one arts college in India in 2002.
The objective of the college has been on providing higher education that adapts itself quickly to the changing environment for a meaningful and self-supporting life to the not so privileged sections of the society. The emphasis is also on providing quality education that fosters sense of responsibility, integrity, honesty and social awareness within the students.
