St. Stephens College, Delhi
INTRODUCTION
St. Stephens College is the oldest college in Delhi. The glorious history of St. Stephens can be traced back to 1st February 1881 when it started functioning in a small house in Katra Khusal Rai near Kinari Bazar in Chadni Chowk. It was established by a Christian Mission from west Coat House, Cambridge. Initially St Stephens College was affiliated to Calcutta University, then to Punjab University and finally with the establishment of the Delhi University in 1922 it became a part of it. It claims itself to be a religious foundation that draws inspiration from life and teaching of Jesus Christ.
This College of Delhi University focuses on the development of integrated personality of the students and provides ample facilities for it. The library of the college contains some ninety thousand books. It has super outdoor and indoor game facilities. The Francis Monk gymnasium, the Junior Common room and the Ladies Common room provides facilities for various indoor games including gymnastics, squash, badminton, tale tennis and others.
Admission in St. Stephens College
Admission to St. Stephens College is based on the academic record and an interview. Every year it declares a certain cut off mars for admitting students into the college. For admission to under graduate courses in St. Stephens College only those candidates are called for interview whose percentage in 10+2 exam are above the declared cut off marks. For admission to M.A./Msc. courses in St. Stephens College only those candidate are considered for admission whose names are cleared by the relevant departments of the University. Therefore the candidates need to apply separately in both the University and the college.
For admission to St. Stephens College for the academic year 2009-2010 application forms, prospectus and other documents will be made available from the second 25th May 2009. One can avail these from the college counter and also by post. You will also be able to download and submit the application form for undergraduate courses on the college Website. Last date for submitting forms is June 15, 2009.
Departments and Courses of St. Stephens College:
- The Chemistry Department offers three-year degree programme in B.Sc (hons), Bs. (G) Chemistry and two-year programme in Msc. Chemistry.
- The Department of Computer Science offers three-year degree programmes in B.Sc (G) with Computer Science.
- The Economics Department offers three-year degree programmes in B.A (hons) Economics and two year programme in M.A Economics.
- The English Department admits students for three year B.A. (hons) and two year M.A. programme.
- The History and Political Science department offers three-year degree programmes in B.A (hons) history, and two-year degree programme in M.A. History.
- The Department of Mathematics operates a center for Mathematical Sciences and offers three-year degree programme in B.A (hons) Mathematics.
- The Physics Department in St Stephens College offers quality education in Bsc. and Msc. level.
- The Sanskrit and Hindi Department offers three-year degree programme that leads to B.A. (hons) in Sanskrit.
In addition to all these departments the college also has the department of philosophy, department of Urdu and Persian and also School of Music.
