In India the first Open University started operating in the year 1982. The concept of distance learning in India is rapidly gaining pace. Distance learning is of 2 types - Open system and Regular system.
In case of the former, no formal qualification is required if you want to pursue a course. However, few institutions that offer open system of distance education require a student to have attained at least 18 years of age for admission into bachelor programs and 21 years in case of a post graduate program. In the latter (regular system), the eligibility criteria for seeking admission into a distance learning program is same as in case of a classroom academic program. Few universities require students to qualify in a written test.
