Montessori Schools in India
Montessori schools in India follow the principles developed by Maria Montessori, an Italian lady born in 1970. Maria Montessori was a physician by profession and her principles are widely accepted as effective methods of developing the child emotionally, physically and mentally. Although there are some schools that provide courses for the elementary, middle and high school level, most Montessori schools in India are meant for children in the age group of 2-6 years.
There are various Montessori schools in India that are not affiliated to any Montessori Association. They tend to follow the Montessori method with some modifications.
One of such schools that has marked its name is the City Montessori School (CMS) of Lucknow.
There are some Montessori schools in India that are affiliated with and recognized by Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), set up by Maria Montessori in Italy in 1929. Other Montessori Schools in India are associated with either the Indian Montessori Centre (IMC) or Indian Montessori Association (IMA).
However, the reach of Montessori education in India is limited to the affluent sections of the society and most of the Montessori schools in India are located in cities. But the trend is gradually changing and various Montessori schools are coming up in small towns and cities of India. For example the A.K. Montessori School operates in a densely populated town like Varanashi to provide education to the underprivileged children. The Indian Montessori Centre is also collaborating with state governments to provide the fruits of Montessori method of education to all sections of the society.
