New Pages in the history of IIT Bombay

Friday, 8th August 2008

New Delhi:With the implementation of the 2008 academic reforms of IIT Bombay, some new pages would be added in the history of the institute. The academic curricula would go a step closer to the American system as the choice of the undergraduate students would increase with effect from the 2008 academic year with the introduction of 17 minor courses that also include management courses. The decision to include management courses right at the undergraduate courses has been taken in view of the fact that the percentage of students pursuing a career in management is steadily rising. According to a report, around 41% of the class of 2006 from IIT B is pursuing a career in management. In order to implement it, the institute has reduced the mandatory credits for the Bachelor of Technology Programme, from 330 to 252. And the students would be able to choose the minor course in the third semester.

While the 17 courses include engineering courses like computer science, management, electrical engineering, energy systems engineering, environmental science engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering , aeronautical engineering, civil engineering statistics, the engineering-management combination is expected to attract more eyeballs and more and more institutes are expected to follow suit. This initiative of IIT Bombay can be seen in the larger context of innovative steps that the educational institutes are taking in India in the recent times. While the Ramjas College of Delhi University is trying to introduce “Peer Tutoring”, many others are inviting faculty from different countries of the world to make the students familiar with diverse viewpoints of prominent people.
