Ans: Ayurveda or 'Science of Life', is said to
have originated in India in the pre-vedic period (5000
years B.C). Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, the earliest
texts of Ayurveda were documented 1000 years B.C. This
time-tested method of maintaining health continues to
be relevant even in this modern period. There are various
institutes in India that offer BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic
Medicine & Surgery), M.D. (AY)/ M.S. (Ay), P.G Diplomas,
PhD and certificate and Introductory courses for foreigners.
There are more than 187 teaching institutes for undergraduate
courses, 51 institutes for postgraduate courses and 16
institutes that offer specialties in post graduation.
The Central Council of Indian Medicine is a body corporate
established under the provisions of IMCC Act, 1970 to
maintain Central Register of Practitioners of Indian Medicines
and for dealing with matters connected therewith. The
Council is responsible for maintaining the minimum standards
of education. Some of the best Ayurvedic Colleges in India
are-

The time of admission in these institutes may vary. The
minimum qualification for getting admitted to these institutes
is to pass the higher secondary examination in science
with biology as a subject. The institute of medicine of
Beneras Hindu University also conducts certificate and
introductory courses for foreigners. A valid passport
and student VISA is essential for entry in these courses
and applications for admission should be routed through
Government of India.
