Higher Education in Jammu & Kashmir
Jammu & Kashmir is a state in the northernmost region of India and is mostly located in the Himalayan Mountains. Owing to the social and political turmoil in the state, the quality of education is not of excellent standard as compared to other Indian states. However the government of Jammu & Kashmir with the assistance of the central government is taking steps to improve the system of education in the state. There are several renowned institutions of higher studies including degree colleges in Jammu & Kashmir, which provide courses in engineering, medicine, management and several other disciplines.
As indicated by the 2001 census, literacy rate of Jammu and Kashmir was 55.5 % with male literacy rate being at 66.6 % and female at 43 %. According to a national sample survey carried out in 2004, the literacy rate in Jammu and Kashmir was at 65.33 % due to a sustained education campaign in the state. There is also a worrisome rise in number of dropouts among migrant Kashmiri youths in Jammu.

Some of the Bachelor degree programs include Bachelor of Architecture, BDS (Dental course), Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Hotel Administration and several others. Engineering course include Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech). Under Graduate law degree courses are offered by many law colleges in Jammu & Kashmir. Several management and medical courses are also available at some colleges in the state.

Through the attempts of the state government, many new colleges have come up in Jammu & Kashmir. Law colleges in state include Sopore Law College, Kashmir Law College, Dogra Law College, K. C. Law College, C. M. H. College of Legal Studies, Jammu Law College and Ashoka Law College. Institute of Hotel Management is another job-oriented college in Jammu & Kashmir. There are two dental colleges which are Government Dental College and Institute of Dental Sciences. Jammu Institute of Ayurved & Research is an ayurvedic college in Jammu & Kashmir.
