Universities in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is a state in the northernmost part of India, which is located mainly in the Himalayan Mountain region. The state shares its border with Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the south, China to the north and east and Pakistan-administered Kashmir to the west. The Education system in Jammu & Kashmir is divided into 5 levels namely primary, middle, higher secondary, college and university. In the year 1970, the State Government set up its education board and university. Furthermore, the government with the assistance of the centre is making attempts to enhance the education policy in Jammu & Kashmir. The Universities in Jammu & Kashmir are the centers for pursuing higher education in various disciplines.

Courses offered at Universities in Jammu & Kashmir

There are a number of Universities in Jammu & Kashmir that provides higher education in the fields of management, medicine, computer applications, engineering and regional studies among others. The state Universities also conduct advanced research work as part of their course curriculum. Admissions to the degree programs at the various Universities in Jammu & Kashmir are given on the basis of merit. In addition to conventional courses, students can also opt for job oriented vocational program offered at the Universities of Jammu & Kashmir.

Types of Universities in Jammu & Kashmir

The general Universities in Jammu & Kashmir include University of Jammu, (Tawi), University of Kashmir, Srinagar, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Jammu and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University. Students wishing to pursue higher education in medicine can apply for admissions to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences located in Srinagar. The university offering engineering and management courses is the National Institute of Technology in Srinagar. Another university offering specialized program is Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology in Srinagar.
