Higher Education in Karnataka
Karnataka is one of the states in South India that is home to a good number of higher educational institutions. At present, the state comprises 121 private engineering colleges; nine aided engineering colleges and 11 government colleges. There are 33 medical colleges of which only 10 are run by the Government. Out of the 141 colleges in Karnataka, only 30 are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation for select educational programs. In 2008, 36 additional colleges wait for approval from AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). According to the 2001 census, the literacy rate of Karnataka was 67.04%. The male literacy rate is higher at 76.29% compared to the female, which is at 57.45%.

The medical colleges functions under the jurisdiction of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.
