Swami Vivekanand had once said - “Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man” and this is what every Kolkattans have always believed and still continue to believe. Be it in history, or be it in the present times, education has always found a priority in Kolkata. Kolkata education has always lured the knowledge seekers from different corners of the country, in the historical times. Today, Kolkata education has become so popular, that students are pouring in not only from different regions of the country, but also from various corners of the world. Today, the literacy rate in the city is 80.86% and the city is still dreaming big.
A Brief History:
Kolkata is the birthplace of some of the best-known geniuses in India, like Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Keshab Chandra Sen. These are the men who infused the importance of education. Back in the historical times, education in Kolkata was limited to Bangla and Sanskrit. As the British Imperialism began, the concept of western education started to spread its influence. That was when the reformists and great scholars like Ram Mohan Roy and Vidyasagar came into the scene, and education in Kolkata found its actual beginning.
Education System in Kolkata:
Often referred to as the “city of intellectuals”, the city has come a long way where education is concerned and Kolkata education is still growing in leaps and bounds. The schools here are either state government aided or are run by private (or religious) organizations. The medium of instruction is English or Bengali, though it is not uncommon to find Hindi and Urdu as the instruction medium in some schools.
The schools are affiliated under any of these three boards:
Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE/ISC)
Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE)
West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (W.B.S.E/W.B.H.S.E)
The city follows 10+2+3 education plan. Students, on completion of their secondary education, move on to a 2 year junior college (also referred to as pre-university) or in schools which have higher secondary level. Students at this level can choose a subject of their choice like science, commerce or liberal arts. Vocational streams can also be opted. The next level that follows, after junior college, is, the professional or general degree programmes.
Universities in Kolkata:
There are nine universities in Kolkata and most of the colleges in the city are affiliated to these universities. The University of Calcutta (established in 1857) has affiliated 200 colleges under it. The other notable universities are West Bengal University of Technology, Bengal Engineering & Science University, and Jadavpur University. There are some deemed universities also like St. Xavier’s College, Shibpur Engineering College and Presidency College (only in some subjects) to name a few.
