Introduction: The Goethals Indian Library & Research Center is a unique library that was built with the prime mission to conserve and make proper utilization of the precious collection of books of Paul Goethals, S.J. Archbishop Goethals, a Belgian who was Archbishop of Calcutta from 1886 to 1901.He had donated his invaluable treasury of books to the Jesuit Fathers in order to hand them down to common public so that they could be of use.

Introduction: The Goethals Indian Library & Research Center is a unique library that was built with the prime mission to conserve and make proper utilization of the precious collection of books of Paul Goethals, S.J. Archbishop Goethals, a Belgian who was Archbishop of Calcutta from 1886 to 1901. He had donated his invaluable treasury of books to the Jesuit Fathers in order to hand them down to common public so that they could be of use.

It was with this vision that the library was founded in the campus adjacent to The St.Xaviers' College, Kolkata. Housed in one of the best buildings in the city the library with its renovations and modern amenities serves as a premier Research and Reference Center. The collection of the archbishop is absolutely varied and the library constitutes books of multifarious interests namely-Ancient India; the Portuguese in India; the Dutch; the French; the Muhamedddan period; the British period; Gazetteers; the States; the Tribes; Archaeology; the Arts; Religions; Philosophy; Indology; Natural History; Travels to name a few. Apart from these, there are six large volumes of oriental scenery each containing 24 views, color engravings by Thomas and William Daniell between 1795 and 1803.

    Apart from the huge bouquet of books available the library also boasts of Plates and maps, Bibliographies, periodicals. It has a rare collection of books, which dates back to 500 years.

  • Membership at Goethals Indian Library & Research Center:
    There are 2 kinds of membership at this library-Individual and Institutional. The Life Membership costs Rs. 2,500 for Institutions and Rs. 1,000 for individuals. Annual subscription rate is Rs. 500 for Institutions and Rs. 250 for individuals. There are short-term memberships for Rs. 50 a month for individuals and Rs. 25 (Researchers on a short stay). The payment mode could be either cash/check. The library renders free of cost services to students who need to produce valid credentials for that matter.
