Maharashtra is essentially educational hub and Pune is regarded as one of the main destinations for education. Students from other states and also from other countries flock to this city for pursuing a career in their own chosen field.
Other cities in Maharashtra that are known for having a sound educational base include Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Aurangabad, Nagpur, and Mumbai.
Education system in Maharashtra
The different educational tiers in the state include pre-preparatory level of education. This phase continues for a period of 3 years. The Montessori school teachers play a vital role in molding the thought process of the toddlers at the nascent stage.
The education set up in Maharashtra has undergone changes over the years to make the academic curricula more student-friendly. For instance, as of January 2010, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary Education decided that "Best of 5" will be the criterion for selecting candidates for admission into colleges.
This policy was applicable for students appearing for their Senior Secondary Certificate Examination. For example, if a student is appearing in 6 subjects, he can choose marks of any 5 subjects in which he has scored the highest leaving the other in which he has scored less.
This will not include English or Marathi or the compulsory subjects.
In 2010, the school education system also underwent a change. SCF or State Curriculum Framework was set up so that school education was "contemporary and relevant".
During the same period, the concept of virtual classrooms through video conferencing was also decided upon.
Educational reforms in Maharashtra
As of August 17th 2011, Maharashtra has decided that it will allow "private entities" to form new universities. This measure has been taken with the hope that it will appeal to investors.
Maharashtra is the country's 10th state to take this step. Earlier, other states have already implemented this policy of letting private entities form universities.
Observing past as well as current trends, around 13% students qualifying in their Senior Secondary Certificate Examination in the state actually opt for higher education. This was announced by Rajesh Tope, who is Maharashtra's Minister for Higher and Technical Education.
The main reason for taking this measure is to increase the percentage rate to 20% from the prevailing 13%. The Minister has set the date of achieving the target by 2020.
If the education sector in Maharashtra has to improve and grow, the only way is through private sector investments.
