Universities in Maharashtra

Besides its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, silvery beaches and idyllic locations on the Western Ghats, Maharashtra is known for Marathi literature and the magical world of Bollywood. With its rich Maratha history and share in Indian freedom movement, this state has a cultural tradition of its own. One can get an idea about the education system of the state from its literacy rate which exceeds the national average. Types of Universities:

Several Maharashtra universities including University of Pune and Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University conduct programs in diverse streams. You will also find universities such as Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University and Marathwada Agricultural University in Parbhani, which offer UG, PG, diploma and doctoral programs in specific fields of study. Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University in the state is a notable name that specializes in the field of education for women.


Maharashtra also has nationally acclaimed institutes such as Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai, Gokhale Institute of Politics & Economics and Deccan College Post Graduate & Research Institute in Pune.
Mode of Learning and other Features:

Universities such as Central Institute of Fisheries Education in Mumbai and University of Mumbai offer distance learning programs apart from regular courses. Centers of excellence in the state such as International Institute for Population Sciences in Mumbai also offer short-term and correspondence programs. Maharashtra also has Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University offering only distance learning modules.
There are several academic centers such as Amaravati University in the state, which offer extension programs and adult education programs for transfer of technology and increasing awareness about literacy and education. Most Maharashtra universities including Bharati Vidyapeeth University in Pune conduct its programs from its campuses as well as affiliated colleges. There are also universities such as Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, which have placement cells to facilitate students in getting jobs.
