Colleges in Meghalya

Meghalaya is another state in the northeastern region of India and is home to several institutions of higher learning. The state has a central university, which is situated at Shillong. Most of the colleges in Meghalaya are affiliated to this university. There are quite a few professional colleges including Shillong Engineering & Management College located at Mawlai in Shillong. Meghalaya became the second state in Northeast region to launch EDUSAT, which is a satellite-based education project. This project was launched to offer distant education to students in Meghalaya living in inaccessible and remote areas.

According to the 2001 census of India, the literacy rate of Meghalaya is approximately 63.31 %. In the year 2004-2005, there were 41315 students who enrolled into colleges in Meghalaya.

The students can opt for general courses under the science, commerce and humanities streams. Professional degree courses offered by a few Meghalaya colleges include management programs, medical courses, fashion-designing and engineering courses such as B.E, B.Tech in civil, mechanical, electrical, computer and chemical engineering. Other disciplines in which courses are offered by colleges in Meghalaya include law, nursing, teaching and hotel management.

Some of the famous colleges in the state include Bissau College, Shillong; Union Christian College; St. Antonys College; St. Edmunds College; Marys College and Women’s College. Shillong Engineering & Management College is the only engineering college in the state.
