About Education in Meghalaya


The government of Meghalaya has played a crucial role in developing the system of education in the state . According to 2001 census report, the state has a literacy rate of 63.31%. The literacy rates for males and females are 66.14% and 60.41% respectively. In order to improve the academic scenario of the state, Meghalaya has introduced compulsory and free education for students up to 14 years of age. It follows the 10+2 pattern of education and the state schooling system includes primary schools, middle schools and higher secondary schools. Different Kinds of Schools in Meghalaya


Several primary, middle and high schools function in Meghalaya. The schools in Meghalaya are either affiliated to the state education board, the CBSE board or ICSE board.

Number of Schools in Meghalaya


As per a survey conducted in the year 2004-05, the total number of schools in Meghalaya is 8321 (approx.). This includes primary and junior basic schools, middle and senior basic schools and high and higher secondary schools.

Medium of Teaching in Meghalaya Schools


English is generally the medium of instruction in ICSE and CBSE schools in Meghalaya. Regional languages are also taught in most of the schools in Meghalaya either as first or as second language.

Drop Outs in Meghalaya Schools


Mid day meals are provided in the government schools of Meghalaya to increase the rate of retention and reduce the drop out rate as well. Apart from this, the state government has also taken up several initiatives for the overall development of education in Meghalaya.

Some of the CBSE affiliated schools in Meghalaya are Kendriya Vidyalaya Laitkorpeak, Kendriya Vidyalaya N E H U Permanent Campus Umshing, Kendriya Vidyalaya Tura, Kendriya Vidyalaya Nepa and Kendriya Vidyalaya Umroi Cantonment Barapani.
