The two Universities in Pondicherry are the Pondicherry University and Vinayaka Mission's University. Pondicherry University was founded in October 1985 by the Government of India. As a Central University, it is wholly supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Presently the University offers academic expertise of over 200 teaching faculties. It also imparts distance education to students all over India through its 57 affiliated colleges. Vinayaka Mission's University is another center of higher education in Pondicherry offering excellence in the field of medicine.
