Education System in Pondicherry

Pondicherry is a small city on the southern coast of India, which was renamed as Puducherry by the Pondicherry (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2006. Over the years, the city has developed into a major educational destination in south India. The government has taken steps to develop the IT education in Pondicherry. Distinguished institutions such as the Pondicherry University and Jawaharlal Institute of Post -Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) have been instrumental in raising the standard of higher education system in the city. The Universities in Pondicherry offer quality learning and research in diverse disciplines for students from all over India.

Courses offered at Universities in Pondicherry

There are two universities in Pondicherry that offer a range of degree and diploma courses. Students can also pursue their doctoral studies from the central university in the city. In addition to regular courses the Pondicherry University also offer Distance Education. The courses offered through distance learning mode include MBA in Marketing, Finance, Human resources Management and International Business. These are generally job oriented courses for candidates aspiring to enter the corporate world. The department of humanities at Pondicherry University offers courses in English, French, Sanskrit, Philosophy, Performing Arts and other subjects.

Leading Universities in Pondicherry

The two Universities in Pondicherry are the Pondicherry University and Vinayaka Mission's University. Pondicherry University was founded in October 1985 by the Government of India. As a Central University, it is wholly supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Presently the University offers academic expertise of over 200 teaching faculties. It also imparts distance education to students all over India through its 57 affiliated colleges. Vinayaka Mission's University is another center of higher education in Pondicherry offering excellence in the field of medicine.
