When it comes to education in the northern part of India, the significant contribution of Punjab deserves a special mention. The state has a literacy rate of 69.95 % which includes male and female literacy rate of 75.63% and 63.55 % respectively. The Punjab education department is in charge of the education system of the state and includes four directorates like
Directorate of Secondary Education, Directorate of Public Instruction (Colleges), Directorate of Primary Education and Directorate of State Council of Educational Research and Training. The state provides free and compulsory primary education to students between six to fourteen years of age. Different Kinds of Schools in Punjab
Both government aided and schools run by private organizations operate here in Punjab.
