INTRODUCTION

Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata was established on 17th December 1931 by Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, the renowned Indian scientist and applied statistician, who pioneered the work on anthropometric variation in India. Prof. Mahalanobis, recipient of the Padma Vibhushan award by the Government of India, contributed prominently to the cause of industrialization and economic development of a newly independent India while working with his colleagues at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.

The humble origins of ISI Kolkata began in 1931 in a small room in Presidency College, Kolkata as a non-profit organization under the Societies Registration Act (XXI of 1860). Today, ISI Kolkata is a state-of-the-art Institute dedicated to the research, teaching and application of statistics, natural sciences and social sciences that has an annual expenditure of over Rs. 15,000,000. Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata has been accorded the status of an Institution of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959.

  • Undergraduate Programs: ISI Kolkata offers 3 years B.Stat.( Hons.) and B.Math( Hons.) courses at the Undergraduate level.
  • Postgraduate Programs : ISI Kolkata offers 2 years M.Stat., M.Math., M.S. In Quantitative Economics, M.Tech. in Computer Science and M.Tech. in Quality, Reliability and Operations Research at the Postgraduate level.
  • Ph.D. Programs : ISI Kolkata offers Ph.D. Programs in Statistics, Mathematics, Quantitative Economics, Computer Science and other subjects related to Statistics.
  • Other Courses: ISI Kolkata offers Diplomas, Associateship and Certificate Programs apart from its regular courses.

Admissions and Eligibility at ISI Kolkata
  • For admissions to the Undergraduate Programs at ISI Kolkata, a candidate needs to have passed 10+2 years of Higher Secondary Education or equivalent with Mathematics and English. Candidates are short listed for admission on the basis of a written test conducted in various centers across India followed by an interview.
  • For admissions to the Postgraduate Programs at ISI Kolkata, candidate who have passed the Bachelor's Degree in their respective areas are eligible. Students of ISI Kolkata are offered direct entry into the programs. Students of other institutes are selected on the basis of their past academic performance, performance in written selection tests and subsequent interview.
  • For admissions to the Ph.D. Programs at ISI Kolkata, candidate who have passed the Master's Degree or equivalent in their respective areas are eligible. Students are selected on the basis of their past academic performance, performance in written selection tests and subsequent interview. Candidates who have been awarded research fellowship by CSIR / NBHM are eligible for direct admissions to the course.
  • For admissions to Diploma, Certificate and Associateship programs, candidates need to fulfill the eligibility criteria stipulated by the Institute for the respective programs.
