Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore has been one of the pioneering breeding institutes of the world which aims at evolving superior varieties of sugarcane to cater to the needs of the various agro climatic zones in the country.

The Institute has successfully evolved various superior varieties of sugarcane, thus elevating the status of India from a sugar importer to the largest producer of sugar in the world today. Besides being the repository of the largest collection of sugarcane germplasm in the world, Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore have also made commendable contributions to the areas of crop production and crop protection researches in India.

Introduction:
The Raman Research Institute, Bangalore was set up in 1948 by Dr. C V Raman. Initially, the Institute was involved in conducting research in various areas of physics that was of interest to Dr. Raman. In 1934, the Government of Mysore gifted a plot of land to the Indian Academy of Sciences. This act of the Government of Mysore led to the foundation of the Raman Research Institute. In 1956 Dr. C V Raman gifted the Indian Academy of Sciences certain movable and immovable properties for the use and benefit of the functioning of the Raman Research Institute. In 1971, after Dr. C V Raman expired, the Indian Academy of Sciences created a charitable trust named Raman Research Institute (RRI Trust) and transferred to it all the properties that it had so far held for the functioning of RRI. The functions of the Trust were to maintain the organization and facilitate research within the RRI. The Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India took over the RRI in 1972 and has till date been funding the institution. The administration of RRI is being looked after by Governing Council and Prof. Ravi Subrahmanyan is the present director.

Academic Programs offered by RRI:
  • PhD Program: A rigorous PhD program is followed by the RRI, which is affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. Eligibility: Applicants must have a first class M.Sc degree in Physics, Chemistry or a first class in Engineering. For seeking admission to the course one needs to pass the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) administered by the Institute of Physics ( IOP), Bhubaneswar.
  • Visiting Students Program: A visiting Students program is conducted by RRI during the summer vacations. Students pursuing undergraduate or master degree program in science or Engineering are eligible to apply. The duration of such programs vary from 6 weeks to 3 months.
