The Institute has a Major Thrust on Leprosy (70%) and relevnt areas fo Tuberculosis (20%) as well as HIV (10%). The institute has established its leadership in all important aspects of Leprosy and Mycobacterial Research. The institue is participating in and coordinating several Multi-Centric Studies. it is serving as a National Repository for Mycobacteria and is a Reference Centre for HIV Screening. |

The Mission to provide leadership in Biomedical Research on HIV / AIDS in India with an aim to Compliment and Strengthen the National AIDS Control Programmes. , NARI has isolated HIV - 1 and HIV - 2 Strains of Virus for Characterisation Necessary for base-line work for future efforts towards Development of AIDS vaccine using Indian Viral Strains.
