Initially known as the "King George VI Royal Indian Military College", the school was founded on 30th December 1945. The school was reorganized as a Residential school on July 1952 . It got its present name only on 01 February 1966.

Admission process:
- Boys within the age of 10-12 years are eligible for admission in class VI.
- 67% of the total seats are reserved for the ‘Entitled Category’. The children of the Ex- service NCOs, JCOs and ORs of the Army belong to the 'Entitled Category'.
- The admissions are strictly on the basis of written tests and interview which are conducted by a Board of officers. The test is usually scheduled in the month of February every year at various centers all over the country.
- A merit list is prepared based on the results of these tests at the Military Training Directorate, Army Headquarters.
- The remaining 33% of seats are for the ‘Non-entitled Category’. In this category belong the sons of Civilians and Service Officers (13% of the seats is reserved for the children of civilians and 20% for the sons of Officers).
- The admissions of the non entitled category are done by the Principal based on the entrance test.
