About: Sprawling over 225 acres of land Sainik School, Kazhakootam strives forward with the primary aim of preparing students mentally, physically and academically to get through national Defense Academy. Sited on the National Highway 47, the school is 18 kms away from Trivandrum. Nestled between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, the expansive campus of Sainik School, Kazhakootam forms an ideal place for military oriented boarding school.
The concept of Sainik School was presented by Late V.K. Krishna Menon, who was once our Defense Minister. He understood the need for schools that would follow not only the rudiments of a military way of life but also serve as an ideal place to nurture the hardy and intelligent boys hailing from the rural areas of our country. He also felt that common schools often could not attain the physical, mental and intellectual level that is needed to be an officer cadre. The then chief minister of Kerala Late Pattom Thanu Pillai chose Kazhakootam as the venue for building Sainik School in Kerala. The school came into being in 20th January 1962.
