Introduction: The Mellon Fellowship for Dissertation Research in Original Sources is sponsored by the Andrew W Mellon Fellowships and is administered by Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). Under this Fellowship program awards are annually awarded to deserving scholars, irrespective of their nationality, for conducting studies in humanities.
Objectives of Mellon Fellowship:

The main objectives of this scholarship program are:

  • Assist young scholars in humanities and associated fields of social sciences
    acquire relevant skill and creative knowledge from sources, which are original in
    nature.

  • Enable scholars to do research work for dissertation papers by studying original sources.

  • Boost in-depth and novel methods of study from original works housed in
    libraries, archives, museums, historical societies and repositories spread across the
    U.S.A. and abroad.

  • Provide innovative ideas from the perspective of doctoral candidates as to how the
    resources for scholars can be accessed easily in future.



    The monetary reward associated with each Mellon Fellowship is $ 1,600 per month for 8-12 months. For taking part in symposiums on research in original sources, scholars are given $ 800. For submitting a well-compiled research report to CLIR scholars are given a maximum award of $ 20,000. All these awards include a stipend and expenses incurred on account of conducting research work.

    The deadline for filing in applications is 15th November every year and on 1st February every year the official notification is posted on the website. Only candidates interested in doing doctoral work in humanities should apply for this fellowship award, as this is the eligibility criterion. The other eligibility criterion is that the scholar must have official enrolment in a doctoral program in the U.S. and be in a position to complete a dissertation during the award period.
