Introduction: The National Overseas Scholarship from Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment allocates funds to deserving candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, De- notified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Landless Agricultural Laborers and Traditional Artisans for furthering their educational career in a country outside India. The students can get themselves enrolled in post graduation courses, Ph.D. programs and post–doctoral programs in the following areas
  • Engineering
  • Technology & Science
Under the National Overseas Scholarship scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, 20 scholarships are annually awarded. The following are the distribution scheme of the scholarship awards:
  • Scheduled Castes: 17
  • De- notified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes: 2
  • Landless Agricultural Laborers and Traditional Artisans: 1
Eligibility Criteria for the National Overseas Scholarship from Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment

The following are the eligibility criteria for awarding scholarships to the students under the various categories:

A. Post Doctoral
  • 60% marks or equivalent grade in post-graduation
  • Ph.D. Degree and 5 years experience either in research or in teaching or professional field
B. Ph.D
  • 60% marks or equivalent grade in post-graduation
  • 2 years experience either in research or in teaching or professional field or M.Phil degree
C. Master’s Degree
  • 60% marks or equivalent grade in graduation
  • 2 years work experience in relevant field
  • For all the above categories, the candidates should be under 35 years of age as on the first day of the month in which the scheme is advertised
  • Income of the applicant, either individually or together with family should not exceed Rs.18,000/- per month. This fact should be authenticated by the respective employers and a copy of the latest tax assessment certificate should be attached.
  • Only one child belonging to the same parents will be given the scholarship. The candidate will have to give a declaration in this regard
  • An individual can be given the scholarship only once during his lifetime
Besides the aforesaid eligibility requirements, there also are certain mandatory requirements which are required to be fulfilled prior to applying for the scholarships.

Duration:

Post Doctoral:

The duration of the post doctoral scholarship under the scheme is for a period of 18 months.

Ph.D

The duration of the post doctoral scholarship under the scheme is for a period of 36 months

Master’s Degree:

The duration of the post doctoral scholarship under the scheme is for a period of 36 months

Value of Scholarship :
  • For all levels of the scheme, an annual maintenance allowance of USD 8,200 has been earmarked. For candidates in UK the maintenance allowance is 5,200 pound sterling across all levels
  • The candidates can earn an additional income of USD 2400/- per year and 1560 pound sterling per year through research or teaching assignments over and above the scholarship amount
  • A contingency allowance for books and other requirements for an amount of USD 550/- per year and 400 pound sterling per year is given under the scheme
  • Actual poll tax, in applicable cases, will be covered under the scheme
  • The fees for the candidates visa in Indian currency is covered under the scheme
  • A grant of Rs. 1,100 for purchase of equipments is covered under the scheme
  • Journey expenses for a maximum of 15 US Dollars is also covered
  • Medical insurance premium is covered under the scheme
  • Air fare from India to the institute and back by economy class is covered
  • Actual expenses incurred by the student for local travel by train or bus or ferry, while studying abroad, is covered under the scheme
  • Expenses incurred by the candidate for traveling, to and fro, in connection with interviews held by the government is covered to the extent of second class train fare or bus fare.
