Doon School

INTRODUCTION

Doon School is counted amongst one of the most famous schools in India, and sometimes also referred to as the Eton of India. Satish Ranjan Das, one of pre-Independence India’s famous barristers, and a member of the Executive Council of the Viceroy of India established the school. The objective behind the establishment of the school was not only setting up an institution in line with the tradition of English schools, but also the one that fostered unique Indian identity. The school had its formal inauguration on October 27, 1935 by Lord Willingdon. The Indian Public Schools’ Society (IPSS), a non-profit making body set up under the Indian Companies Act in 1929, owns the schools and is responsible for the management of the school through a Board of Governors.

Dehra Dun, where the school is located, is located about 250 kms northeast of capital Delhi. The town is also well connected to the capital by road, rail and air.

The school has a unique house system, wherein there are five administrative divisions named Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kashmir, Oberoi and Tata. The principal objective of the school is to provide liberal education to young Indians, and inculcate in them a regard for the principles of secularism, discipline, integrity, and equality. Amidst the stunning environs, and excellent sports and science facilities the student life is monastic.

The school has produced some of the brilliant personalities of India namely the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Cabinet Ministers in the present government Kamal Nath, Mani Shankar Aiyar, and Members of Parliament Rahul Gandhi, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Chief Minster of Punjab Captain Amrinder Singh, and the Chief Minister of Orissa Naveen Patnaik, and famous journalists Karan Thapar and Prannoy Roy, among others.
