University of Madras
University of Madras was established in January 1840. The president of the Madras University at that time was Mr. George Norton. Madras University is considered the mother of most of the old South India Universities. Recently, the area of the University of Madras Jurisdiction has been confined to 3 districts of the Tamil Nadu state.
History of University of Madras
The first demand for higher education in Madras Presidency was voiced to The Right Honourable Lord John Elphinstone G.C.H., Governor of Madras and was supported by 70,000 Native Inhabitants. The University Board was formed in January 1840. The University of Madras spanned and progressed throughout the 19th century.
