Introduction: Indian Institute of Mass Communication was set up on August 17, 1965 as a department of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. It was registered under the Societies Registration Act on January 22nd, 1966 as an autonomous organization. IIMC was established with the purpose of devising a methodology for the proper utilization of communication resources within the country. The plan for the establishment of IIMC was drawn up by a team of experts including representatives of the UNESCO. In the recent past, IIMC has gained recognition from all over the world as a premier institute for the pursuance of Mass Communication. UNESCO among other international organizations has recognized IIMC as an excellent center for training and research in the fields of journalism and its various branches. Indian Institute of Mass Communication has two campuses located at New Delhi and Dhenkanal (Orissa).

Training Programs of IIMC: The following courses are offered in IIMC:
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism – this course is conducted in three languages, English, Hindi and Oriya; Duration: 1 year, Eligibility: graduates from any discipline can apply, candidates awaiting their results can also apply.
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Radio & T.V Journalism – this course is also conducted in English and Hindi; Duration: 1 year, Eligibility: graduates from any discipline can apply, candidates awaiting their results can also apply.
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Advertising & Public Relations - Duration: 1 year, Eligibility: graduates from any discipline can apply, candidates awaiting their results can also apply.
Courses are also conducted for in-service personnel of Central Government. The details are -
  • Orientation course for the Officers of the Indian Information Service.
  • Diploma Course in Development Journalism for Non-Aligned and other developing countries.
  • Short Term Courses/Seminars/Workshops
  • Refresher Courses for the personnel of the Indian Information Service working in various media units of the Central Government.
Certain specialized short term courses are also conducted for media personnel employed in public sector and Government departments.

Admission Procedure at IIMC: Only Indian citizens are eligible for admission. Candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria has to appear in an all India entrance Examination candidates selected in the entrance examination then have to go through a group discussion and Personality test for finally getting selected.

Research Works of IIMC: Several Research programs are undertaken by the IIMC on request of departments of Central and State Governments, public sector industries and several universities. Presently research is conducted under the supervision of Prem Singh Manral and Zahoorul Haq, both of whom are senior research officers. Few recent research projects are - Impact of DAVP's out-door publicity on National Integration and Communal Harmony and Alumni Survey – IIMC.
