Dr. B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar (NITJ), came into existence in 1987 as a regional engineering college. It was granted the status of a National Institute of Technology by the Govt. of India (Ministry of Human Resource Development), on 17th October, 2002. This automatically made NITJ a "Deemed University". It has a vision of enriching India's strength of Technical manpower.
The present Director of NITJ is Dr. Moin Uddin and the present Registrar is Dr. A L Sangal.
With the status of a "Deemed University" being conferred on NITJ, it decides on its own curricula and pattern of evaluation. A credit based semester system has been decided upon.

Courses Offered at NITJ: All the departments offer undergraduate (B.Tech) courses and M.Tech courses as well. Some departments also offer Ph.D programs.
Admission Procedures at National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar
1. UG Programs: Admissions to UG programs are done on the basis of AIEEE. Students with science in their 10+2 can sit for this examination. 50% of the seats are reserved for students from within the state of Punjab, while 50% is for students of other states.
2. PG Programs: Various M.Tech courses like M Tech by Research for Regular Candidates, M Tech by Research for Internal Candidates, M Tech by Research for External Candidates, M Tech by Research for Staff under Projects, are offered by NITJ. For regular M.Tech the criteria is that a candidate has to have a valid GATE score and at least 60% in graduation to avail the course.
3. Ph.D Programs: Several Ph.D programs like, Ph D Programs for Regular Candidates, Ph D Programs for Internal Candidates, Ph D Programs for External Candidates, Ph D Programs for Staff under Projects are offered . The criteria for admission in a regular Ph.D course is master's degree in pertinent areas with a minimum of 60% marks and a valid GATE score.
