Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai

The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), was established by the Reserve Bank of India for researching on issues of development. It was registered as an autonomous society in 1986 and as a Public Trust in January 1987. A new campus was inaugurated by Rajiv Gandhi in December 1987. It had started as a full fledged research organization but soon transformed itself into a teaching as well as research organization. It has the aim of producing efficient personnel who are capable of conducting research on developmental issues and policies on economics, energy and environment from an interdisciplinary perspective
Academic Programs:
    The salient features of the academic programs of IGIDR are –

  • The faculty members are from varied academic backgrounds, thus exposing the students to a pool of knowledge.
  • Focus of the curricula is on issues of contemporary relevance & issues which have national as well as international impacts.
  • A high teacher-student ratio is being maintained which facilitates interaction between teachers and students.
  • The students are made to participate as research assistants in the research programs of IGIDR giving them a direct experience of analysis and research work.
Courses Offered at IGIDR
  • M.Sc in Economics: Eligibility: Candidates need to have any of the following degrees to apply for the course - B.A./B.Sc. in Economics/B.Com./B.Stat./B.Sc. (Physics or Mathematics)/ B.Tech./B.E. with at least a Second Division for Economics and 60% for other disciplines. The applicant must have had mathematics at the 10+2 level.
  • M.Phil in Development Studies : Eligibility: Candidates need to have any one of the following degrees – M.A/M.Sc in Economics, M.Stat./M.Sc.(Physics or Mathematics or Environmental Science or Operations Research)/M.B.A./M.Tech./M.E./B.Tech./B.E. with at least 55% marks for Economics and 60% marks for other disciplines. The candidates should have Mathematics as a subject in the 10+2 level.
  • Ph.D in Development studies: Eligibility: Candidates need to have any of the following degrees to apply for the course - B.A./B.Sc. in Economics/B.Com./B.Stat./B.Sc. (Physics or Mathematics)/ B.Tech./B.E. with at least a Second Division for Economics and 60% for other disciplines. The applicant must have had mathematics at the higher secondary level.

Admission procedure at IGIDR:

Admissions to the M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D courses are based on few written exams and interviews. The written exams judge a person's analytical, verbal and mathematical abilities. Students appearing for their final degree exams can apply for the M.Sc course but they will be admitted on a provisional basis.
