The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), was Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhaba's dream which was realized in 1945. Initially it was housed at Peddar Road, Bombay. It was then shifted to Royal Yatch Club, Apollo Bunder. Finally in 1962 it was shifted to its present address of Navy Nagar Campus.
In the beginning research in the fields of Cosmic rays, high energy Physics, theoretical Physics and Mathematics were carried out. TIFR also helped the Atomic Energy Commission by arranging Electronics groups for Atomic Energy work. The progress was steady as subjects like Nuclear Physics, condensed matter physics, Computer science, geophysics, molecular biology, radio astronomy were incorporated in areas of interest.

India's first computer(TIFRAC) was designed by TIFR. Subjects of contemporary interest as semiconductor technology and software technology were being dealt with. The institute was granted the status of a "Deemed University" in 1992
Courses offered at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research
The schools of study and other academic programs are
- School of Mathematics: the first major Institute in India which began conducting research in Mathematics at international level. It began in the 1950s under K. Chandrasekharan and K.G Ramanathan. Two campuses one at Mumbai and the other at Bangalore has about 50 members. The Mumbai campus pursues Pure mathematics while the members carry on research in Applied maths. The current areas of research include Algebra, Alebraic Geometry, Combinatorial Mathemtics, Differential Equations, Lie Theory, Number Theory, so on and so forth.

School of Technology and computer Science: The basic aim of this department is maintaining international standards in research in the fields of Technology and Computer Science so that it helps in improving the standard of life of the Nation. Present areas of research are algorithmics, computational maths, logics of programs, speech and signal processing, robot motion planning, e.t.c.
The TIFR runs a Graduate program which leads to awarding of a PhD degree. M.Sc degrees are also offered in some subjects. An integrated M.Sc/PhD program is also offered. The whole process of completing the PhD course usually requires about 5 years.
Presently the following courses are being offered
Ph.D. Programme in Biology, Chemistry, Computer & Systems Sciences,Mathematics, Physics,Science Education & Interdisciplinary Sciences. Integrated Ph.D. & M.Sc. Programme in Biology.
These programs are conducted at the Mumbai center and various National centers under TIFR.
