Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) is presently known as Thapar University. It was established in 1956 as a joint venture between the State of Patiala and East Punjab states union (PEPSU), the central government and the Patiala Technical Education trust(PTET).
It is a privately managed, grant-in-aid institute It has been conferred the status of a Deemed University in 1985 and have been accredited by the NAAC as a B+ + Institute.
It is located in the 250 Acre Thapar Technology Campus (TTC) and consists of three institutions namely, TU, TP and TCIRD.

The Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India has set up a Center of Relevance and Excellence (CORE) at Thapar University. A Science and Technology Entrepreneur's Park (STEP) has been established by Thapar University along with Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.

TIET also has a Department for Distance Education which offers certain B.Tech Courses.
Admission Procedure at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology: For admission to the B.Tech/B.E program one has to have Physics and mathematics as subjects of 10+2 and has to qualify in the AIEEE.
For admissions in PG programs one has to have 50% marks in the Graduation.
For admission in MCA, MBA one has to have 50% in graduation and has to qualify the entrance test conducted by TIET.
