Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) was established in June, 1960 as a joint venture between the Central and Maharashtra Government. Formerly it was known as the Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE). It is one of the first six Regional Engineering colleges. It has now become a national institute of technology and has been granted the status of a "Deemed University". VNIT was named after the great engineer and visionary, Bharat Ratna Sir. M Visvesvaraya. VNIT has been guiding other engineering colleges in the state of Maharashtra.

It has an aim of improving the technical manpwer of the state. Incorporating newer developments in industrial processes and involving technical personnel in formulation of the syllabus for technical education, so on and so forth. It also offers advanced courses for personnel who are in the profession. VNIT is located in a lush green campus near Ambazari dam in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The official website is www.vnitnagpur.ac.in.

Distance Education Program: Part time semester courses for professionals, teachers and senior U.G/P.G students have been launched by VNIT in collaboration with Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology ( KreSIT) and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT B).
Admission Procedures: Admission to Undergraduate courses are held on the basis of ranks obtained in All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEE). 50% seats are reserved for students of Maharashtra while the rest is for students of other states.
For PG courses Students with valid GATE scores are preferred, in the absence of enough GATE scorers other students are given a chance on the basis of their performance in the entrance examination held by respective departments.

Fee Structure: Undergraduate students have to pay Rs. 11135 in their first sem, whereas in their 3rd, 5th and 7th sems, they have to pay Rs. 10635 each.
Stipendiary students have to pay a total of Rs.36,750, while non-stipendiary students have to pay, Rs.56,570 as their course fees.
For distance education programs, teachers and students have to pay Rs. 4,000 - Rs. 6,000, while practicing professionals have to pay Rs. 7,000 - Rs. 10,000 per semester.
Other Facilities: Students are given the opportunity of participating in various clubs like the NCC, Spic Macay club, Robotics club, Literature club, Photography Club, e.t.c.
