Indian Institutes Of Technology(IIT)

Indian Institute of Technology is known for its grueling admission process, with an acceptance rate of 2%. Governed by the Institute of Technology Act, 1961, the IITs have been declared as "institutions of national importance". Each IIT center is an autonomous university linked to others through a common council. As per order of establishment the different IITs are -

  • IIT Kharagpur (Kharagpur)
  • IIT Bombay (Mumbai)
  • IIT Madras (Chennai)
  • IIT Kanpur (Kanpur)
  • IIT Delhi (New Delhi)
  • IIT Guwahati (Guwahati)
  • IIT Roorkie (Roorkie)

Apart from these 7, according to the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2010, 9 more institutes have been added to the list. These are -

  • IIT Ropar (Rupnagar)
  • IIT Bhubaneswar (Bhubaneswar)
  • IIT Gandhinagar (Gandhinagar)
  • IIT Hyderabad (Hyderabad)
  • IIT Patna (Patna)
  • IIT Rajasthan (Rajasthan)
  • IIT Mandi (Mandi)
  • IIT Indore (Indore)
  • IT-BHU (Varanasi) - this 9th one is under administration of Banaras Hindu University.

Exams Required for Admission in IIT

1. For Undergraduate Courses

Applicants looking to pursue an undergraduate course (B.Tech) in IIT need to qualify in IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) after completion of 10+2 examination. Students appearing in the higher secondary or an equivalent examination with 60% in aggregate (for general candidates) and 55% (for SC, ST and PD candidates) can appear for the entrance examination, generally held in April or May every year. Admission to a program is granted on the basis of their ranking in the qualifying examination. Applicants need to specify any two IIT centers as preference in their application form. Application forms are available from the first week of November. A student can apply online or offline for the IIT-JEE examination.

2. For Postgraduate Courses

For admission to a postgraduate course (M.Tech) an applicant needs to qualify in GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). IITs also offer other postgraduate degrees like M.S. (engineering), M.Sc (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics), and MBA. Admissions to these courses are done through qualifying examinations like CAT (Common Admission Test), CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design) and JAM (Joint Admission to M.Sc).

3. For Doctoral Program

Admission to a doctoral program (PhD) is mainly offered, based on personal interview, though a candidate may also have to appear for a written examination.

Eligibility Criteria to Get Admission in IIT
