About JNU Student Politics
Like other universities in India, JNU student politics have always managed to stir much speculation among the student communities. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was established in the year 1969 and has over the years carved out a niche for itself in the field of higer education in India. JNU Student Politics plays a significant role in the functioning of the University and culture of the campus. Elections to JNU Students Union (JNUSU) is held every year. JNUSU elections have been important in the annals of students politics in India as they are marked more by debates, speeches, promises and less by muscle and money power. Power of influence works more for JNUSU candidates than power of compulsions, which is a pleasant surprise in the horizon of India's students politics.

The JNU Students' Union election is often regarded as a training ground for those students who aspire to get into the world of politics. The varsity has created a number of national-level politicians including Prakash Karat, a Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary among others.
JNU Students Union
The JNU Students’ Union has always been an important voice of the left students' movements in India. The JNUSU has a unique constitution, which is completely drafted by the students themselves. At present the students union is led by the far-left All India Students Association (AISA). Over the years the SFI-AISF alliance has controlled the Central Panel in JNUSU; however, in 2007 the alliance had lost all important posts of the students union by its rival party AISA.

However, students politics in India is all set to undergo a transformation with the Supreme Court complying with the recommendations of J.M. Lyngdoh Committee on students' union elections in universities. JNUSU's reaction to these developments would definitely have an impact on the future of India's students politics.
